Smilebigforgod (born Michael Walker) is an American artist and experience writer/director. He is known for developing participatory media infrastructures, immersive installations, and networked performance systems. His work spans generative game environments, real-time broadcast technologies, and large-scale hybrid events. Walker operates under several pseudonyms, including Smilebigforgod, Saint Michael, Officer Murphy, and Fuckwalker. He is the co-founder of Smilesoft.dev and Rebranding in Progress LLC.
Walker was born in Rochester, New York. As a child, he created Flash websites and founded simsmall.com, an early platform for sharing custom clothing mods for The Sims video game. In the early 2010s, he co-founded a production company in Los Angeles. While working with Katalyst Productions, he co-developed the short-form documentary series Profiles and The Subculture Club, distributed in partnership with YouTube as part of their early content initiatives.
In 2022, Walker co-founded Smilesoft.dev with systems designer and graphics programmer Landon Looper. The company specializes in real-time systems for interactive media. Walker maintains a limited public presence, often using pseudonyms in order to keep his creative projects distinct from his personal identity.
In 2015, Walker created #LIVINGROOMTODAY, a global networked performance series that connected live shows in cities including Los Angeles, New York, and Tokyo. Each show featured simultaneous performances in multiple locations, allowing audience members to interact via live video feeds, chatrooms, and remote staging.
In 2018, Walker co-created Comp USA Live, a hybrid performance series launched at the New Museum in New York.
Walker’s studio SmileSoft.dev contributed system architecture and integration to the Portals Project connecting New York City and Dublin through real-time video sculptures.
Walker served as experience director for GGGLUE x Panasonic KAIROS at Brooklyn Mirage. The project implemented real-time LED media workflows using Panasonic KAIROS and Pixera systems.
Walker co-directed a technical showcase for Pixera’s IP-based media server system using the SMPTE ST 2110 standard.
Walker lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
